Hi there!
How's it going?
How have you been? I'm hoping good?
I recently started a new role as a Product Manager at a new company, so I thought to share a few tips on onboarding
One thing that is key in settling into a new company is onboarding. As a Product Manager, it's crucial you're well-onboarded with the different departments you will be working and liaising with.
The thing about onboarding, especially as a Product Manager is that, it might take a while depending on the organization's onboarding style and how teams function. In some companies, the Product Manager has full control over the engineering and design team, in others, it's not the case. Either place you fall under, don't feel overwhelmed or disappointed.
Onboarding is what happens on your first day of a new job right? Well, sometimes it could be more than that. Sometimes it might take a few days or weeks to be well-onboarded.
Prepping for your resumption and onboarding is something you should start doing before your resumption.
Before your resumption date, you can start documenting what you think can be improved on the current products of the company. Review your offer letter and deliverables and document or plan out how you'll want to go about a few things, depending on your personal goals for the role. You can also pen down the questions you would like to ask your line manager and other team members you would be meeting with.
A few questions to note are;
- How does the product team work?
- Who will I be reporting to directly and who would be reporting to me?
- What's the relationship between the product and engineering team like?
- What can I do to make your work easier?
- How would you like me to communicate with you? etc.
On your day of resumption, depending on the organization you work at, you might be meeting with representatives from each department that you would be working with or just one or two persons. Either way, make sure you have a lot of questions to ask about the company and their work ethic.
After the onboarding, meet with your line manager to discuss how you will be working with them and also the rest of the product team members. There might be other product managers in your team, met with them and learn more about how the product team works. Through them, you can know who heads other teams and how best to reach them.
Meet members of other teams individually and understand how they work and ask how you can make their work easier and how best to work with them. This helps you understand where to start with your work and who to talk to more about product decisions.
After doing this, you'll be more settled into your role. It might be a bit rocky, but you'll get a hang of it with time.
I hope this was helpful.
Till next time. Remain awesome.
Franny.
